In 1881, at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Gran Ballo Excelsior had its premiere. It was one of the 1800s most successful Italian ballet and, as its author Luigi Manzotti explained, it was meant to celebrate the splendour of civilization against the dark forces which keep the people in the ‘darkness of slavery and disrepute’. During those years progress was being celebrated through Universal Expositions, the industrial revolution, colonialism and the concept of national identity was consequently emerging. Having said that, Salvo Lombardo, the leader of the Chiasma company, asks himself what is left of the Western cultural heritage from the late 19th century. Which iconographies and images of the Gran Ballo Excelsior still emerge, in different forms (maybe only in appearance), in the ways we represent the other, draw their bodies and develop relationships between Europe and the so-called ‘rest of the world’?

This is not a re-staging of a traditional ballet, rather it is a relocation to try and find new territories by reflecting on the stereotyped images in the light of the new languages we use to describe the current times.
