Les Nuits Barbares is a work on the origins of Mediterranean culture and has been enthusiastically defined by the international press as “spectacular, sublime and awe-inspiring”. Hervé Koubi rewrites a thousand-year-long history by bringing to the stage the fear of “strangers” and reveals the hidden refinement of cultures often referred to as ‘barbarian.’ It is an original piece which combines the hypnotic power of a war parade with the precision of ballet and reveals to the public what is most charming in the encounter between cultures and religions.
The 15 male dancers whirl their skirts like Dervishes and brandish knives and daggers to music by Wagner, Mozart, and Fauré, mixed with Algerian sounds thus establishing a dialogue with the musical and spiritual heritage of the West. Their masculine sensuality and breath-taking energy reminds one of the whole Barbarian humanity: Persians, Celts, Greeks, Vandals and Babylonians, like dark ghosts from the past who have left a mark on the large crossroads of the Mediterranean basin. All these historical and cultural elements are woven together with different styles of breakdance and hip-hop reinvented in a spectacular way to generate a mix of genres showing an almost spiritual sensuality.
The focus is not on the narrative but on the settings, the presence of flesh and power of images, so the company goes from being an army of warriors to a ballet company or opera choir. Hervé Koubi lifts the shadows from the Barbarian nights to show the dawn of a common culture through a powerful and charismatic exploration of the Mediterranean history.
