VIOLA SCAGLIONE
DIRECTOR OF BTT
Viola was born in Turin and specialized at the ballet school of the Teatro di Torino. She then attended the ‘High On Dance’ in Washington D.C., London Contemporary School and Conservatoire de Boulogne in Paris. She went on to become part of the Balletto Teatro di Torino and trained with Nina Viroubova, Loris Gai and James Urbain who chose her for some solo roles. As a dancer she participated in operas and shows of the Teatro Regio di Torino. In 2002, she went back to the Balletto Teatro di Torino and in 2017 she was appointed Company Director. As the artistic director of BTT, Viola has adopted an inclusive and open approach. She establishes a horizontal dialogue with the company dancers and artists involved in the different pieces by promoting group processes, which are strongly rooted in the combination between personal growth and artistic evolution processes.

The dance stems from a wound inflicted by the winds, anemoi, cutting through the bodies of the dancers. What happens to a body when the wind blows through it? It is somehow robbed, willing or not, of a splinter of its innermost thoughts. It is as if the air movement allowed an exchange between the Self and its container resulting in a physical and emotional liberation which is different from person to person. It is a choreography dedicated to the wind or rather it is a way to rely on it. As in all projects by the choreographer Manfredi Perego, the work is accompanied by a haiku that is devised and created together with the dancers fusing the research for intimate and private words with that operated by the body.

Primitiva is the result of a research about corporeity in its primary elements, a journey in memory through the most archaic and wild self-perception, which is fragile and impulsive at the same time.
It is a utopian attempt to discover the origin of human drives, experience their natural dimension. It is a call on a distant age but deeply rooted inside us and in an environment which seems to be ordinary but is deeply unknown: the body.
It is a journey towards the ‘origin of/unknown impulses/that we create’, as recites the haiku the dancers created during rehearsals, which approaches physical work like a verbal reflection.
